Dandekar Bridge Pipeline Burst: Shivajinagar and Sadashiv Peth Water Supply Remains Disrupted

The Water Supply Department has assured that repairs will be completed, with water supply expected to normalize by March 26.

Pune: Water supply in parts of Shivajinagar and Sadashiv Peth was severely affected on March 25 after a 55-year-old pipeline burst near Dandekar Bridge. The PMC Water Supply Department has assured that repairs will be completed by late evening, with water supply expected to normalize by March 26.

Pipeline Burst Causes Flooding and Road Damage

The 1200 mm diameter pipeline, which supplies water from the Parvati Water Treatment Plant, burst around 9:30 PM on March 24, resulting in large-scale water leakage and flooding on the Swargate-bound road. The water pressure caused a portion of the road near Dandekar Bridge to sink, adding to the disruption.

The Water Supply Department immediately began repair work, but due to delays in receiving necessary materials from Bhosari, the process took longer than expected. Repairs were scheduled to be completed late at night.

Major Areas Affected

Several areas in Shivajinagar faced severe water shortages on March 25, including:

  • Deccan

  • Apte Road

  • Gopal Krishna Gokhale Road

  • Senapati Bapat Road

  • Model Colony

  • Jangli Maharaj Road

Local residents, already struggling with inadequate water supply in recent days, faced additional hardships due to the pipeline burst.

Speaking on the situation, Water Supply Department Chief Nandkishor Jagtap confirmed that the repair work would be completed by evening and that extra water would be supplied temporarily to affected areas in Shivajinagar and Sadashiv Peth.

To assist residents, the department provided free water tankers to those who requested them. Additionally, since a portion of the road near Dandekar Bridge had collapsed, the Roads Department was directed to begin immediate repairs.

Delays in New Pipeline Implementation

The 55-year-old pipeline is still in use because the new water pipeline under the Uniform Water Supply Scheme has not yet been activated. Officials stated that Shivajinagar’s future water supply will be managed through an overhead tank being constructed on Fergusson College Hill, but since this project is incomplete, the old pipeline remains operational. Once the tank is finished, the old pipeline will be phased out.
