Pune Police have intensified their crackdown on drunk driving in 2024, ensuring safer roads for citizens. From January 1 to December 27, action was taken against 5,256 offenders under the “Drunk and Drive” initiative.

During the lockdown, the use of breath analyzers was suspended, providing an advantage to violators. However, in December 2023, the devices were reinstated, enabling the police to curb such offenses effectively.

While minor traffic violations are handled through e-challans, cases involving drunk driving are forwarded to court for legal proceedings. The month of October recorded the highest number of cases, with 1,433 offenders penalized.

To ensure a safer environment during the New Year celebrations, traffic police have announced operations at over 30 locations across Pune using disposable breath analyzers.

The 2024 campaign comes amidst heightened vigilance following the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections. Special measures were implemented to create a secure and fearless environment for citizens, including strict monitoring of road safety violations.

Speaking with mediapersons, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Amol Zende has urged citizens to exercise caution during celebrations. He stated, “Drunk driving not only endangers the driver but also other road users. Citizens must act responsibly while welcoming the New Year. Legal action will be taken against violators without exceptions.”
