Pune: The 19th ISAMPE National Conference on Composites (INCCOM-19) successfully concluded in Pune. The event, focused on the theme "Innovative Technologies in Composites," brought together top experts from research institutions, academia, and industry to explore advancements in composite materials.

Jointly organized by the Research and Development Establishment (Engineers) [R&DE (E)], DRDO, and the ISAMPE Pune Chapter, this two-day conference served as a significant platform for technological progress in the composite sector.

Key Developments and Announcements

During the inaugural session, Dr. Samir V Kamat, Chairman, DRDO, revealed that DRDO is currently developing Radiation Absorbent Materials (RAM)—a specialized composite designed to meet the stealth requirements of the upcoming 5th-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). He also highlighted how composite materials have significantly improved the Tejas fighter aircraft and contributed to extended missile range in recent defense projects.

Technical Discussions and Keynote Addresses

The conference featured keynote speeches from industry leaders, including:

  • Shekhar Sardessai, Managing Director, Kineco Limited

  • Shripad Tokekar, Dassault Systèmes

Additionally, Cmdr Amit Ray from DND (SDG), Indian Navy, delivered an insightful presentation on the role of composites in naval applications. He highlighted the successful indigenous development of sonar domes and emphasized that future naval warships will be lighter, faster, and stealthier, with composites playing a key role. He also stressed the need for high-strength materials that are transparent to sonar to ensure superior acoustic performance.

Over 50-60 research papers were presented during the conference, covering areas such as:

  • Advanced composite mechanics, 3D printing, and manufacturing

  • Nano and hybrid composites

  • Smart composites featuring self-healing and self-diagnosis capabilities with machine learning

  • Future research, including nano fillers and hybrid biofillers for enhanced performance

R&DE (E): Pioneering Composite Innovation

A key highlight of INCCOM-19 was the contribution of R&DE (E), DRDO, in pushing forward India's composite technology. The organization showcased its recent breakthroughs, including:

  • Stealth materials to enhance fighter aircraft capabilities

  • Sonar domes for naval vessels, improving acoustic precision

  • Composite military bridges, which are both lightweight and durable for rapid deployment

  • Nanoparticle-infused composites and fiber additive manufacturing, paving the way for next-generation applications
