Guillain-Barre Syndrome Death Toll Rises to 11 in Maharashtra, Two More Deaths Reported

Pune: The death toll due to Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) in Maharashtra has risen to eleven, with two more deaths recorded in the last 24 hours. Health officials confirmed that a 26-year-old woman from Baramati and a patient from Pimpri-Chinchwad succumbed to the illness on Wednesday (February 19).

The Baramati woman, a college student from the Sinhagad Road area of Pune, had visited her hometown in January when she developed health complications. She was initially admitted to a private hospital in Baramati, but when GBS symptoms were suspected, she was shifted to a Pune hospital on January 25. Despite intensive treatment, her condition worsened over the past week, leading to her demise on Wednesday.

This follows an earlier death on Tuesday, bringing the fatalities to three in just two days. Out of the 11 deaths reported so far, four have been confirmed as GBS-related, while the remaining seven are suspected cases.

GBS Cases in Maharashtra

As of today, 211 cases of GBS have been recorded in Maharashtra, out of which 183 have been confirmed. Among the active cases,

  • 36 patients are in ICU, and

  • 16 patients are on ventilators.

  • Pune Municipal Corporation limits – 42 cases

  • Newly included areas in Pune city – 94 cases

  • Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation – 32 cases

  • Pune Rural areas – 33 cases

  • Other districts – 10 cases

Age-Wise Breakdown of Cases

The highest number of cases have been reported in the 20-29 age group (44 cases), followed by 50-59 age group (30 cases).

  • 0-9 years: 24 cases

  • 10-19 years: 26 cases

  • 20-29 years: 44 cases

  • 30-39 years: 27 cases

  • 40-49 years: 29 cases

  • 50-59 years: 30 cases

  • 60-69 years: 21 cases

  • 70-79 years: 6 cases

  • 80-89 years: 4 cases
