Pune: With a significant rise in Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases in the Sinhagad Road area, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has designated the region between Rajaram Bridge and Khadakwasla as an affected zone. The municipal health department has launched a door-to-door survey, deploying 85 teams to assess the situation and raise public awareness.

Dr. Neena Borade, Head of the PMC Health Department, reassured citizens that control measures are yielding positive results and urged residents not to panic.

Free Treatment and Specialist Support at PMC Hospital

To ensure timely medical intervention, the PMC has arranged free treatment for GBS patients at Kamala Nehru Hospital. Initially, the absence of neurologists in the municipal healthcare system posed a challenge. However, following PMC’s public appeal, four neurologists have volunteered to offer their expertise, with one already providing treatment.

Nodal Officers Appointed to Assist Patients

In an effort to streamline patient care, the health department has appointed nodal officers to oversee hospital coordination. Each officer will manage two to three hospitals, ensuring seamless patient data collection and facilitating access to government health schemes.

Additionally, authorities have intensified disease control efforts by conducting comprehensive stool and water sample testing in affected areas. The PMC has also begun distributing disinfectant Medichlor bottles, with 600 bottles already provided and plans to cover 30,000 households.

103 GBS Cases Reported in Pune; 13 Patients on Ventilator

Maharashtra has reported a total of 111 GBS cases, with one confirmed fatality. Pune remains the worst-affected district, accounting for 103 cases, including 13 patients currently on ventilator support.

Health officials are ramping up patient surveillance in affected zones, with the following distribution of cases:

  • Pune Municipal Corporation: 20 cases

  • Newly merged PMC areas: 66 cases

  • Rural Pune: 5 cases

  • Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation: 12 cases

  • Other districts: 8 cases

Of the total cases, 77 are male and 34 are female. The health department has confirmed that 31 patients have undergone definitive diagnosis for GBS.
