Pune: A rare neurological disorder, Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), has surfaced in Pune, with 22 suspected cases reported under observation. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), along with local health authorities, has swung into action, implementing preventive measures to address the situation.

Understanding Guillain-Barre Syndrome

Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a rare condition where the immune system attacks the nervous system, causing a range of symptoms including muscle weakness, numbness, loss of movement control, and breathing difficulties in severe cases.

Situation Update

Out of the 22 suspected cases, 6 patients are from Pune city, while the rest belong to nearby areas in the district. The affected individuals are currently undergoing treatment at various hospitals in Pune. Samples from these patients have been sent to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for further examination.

Not Contagious but Vigilance Advised

Health officials have confirmed that GBS is not contagious. However, as a preventive measure, screening will be conducted for individuals who were in contact with the affected patients.

PMC's Proactive Response

PMC has set up a dedicated unit for GBS to provide immediate medical support and address potential cases effectively. The health department has ensured that necessary medical infrastructure is in place to tackle this emerging health issue.

Public Advisory

PMC has urged citizens to remain cautious and seek medical advice immediately if they experience symptoms like sudden muscle weakness, numbness, or fatigue. Officials reassured the public that while GBS is rare and serious, it is treatable with timely medical intervention.

“Early detection and prompt treatment are key to recovery. Citizens should not delay seeking help if they suspect symptoms,” advised a PMC health official.
