According to the latest IMD updates, Pune will see daily occurrences of light rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, through May 16. Several city areas, including Magarpatta, have already recorded rainfall, with Magarpatta logging 5.5 mm in the past 24 hours. The IMD’s seven-day forecast indicates that this pattern will persist, with daily minimum temperatures around 23–24°C and maximums ranging from 32°C to 34°C-about 3°C to 4°C cooler than the seasonal average.
Meteorological experts attribute this weather pattern to a combination of upper air circulations over Madhya Pradesh and adjoining regions, as well as a trough extending from the east-central Arabian Sea to northern Chhattisgarh. These systems are driving atmospheric instability across Maharashtra, resulting in increased cloud cover, high humidity, and scattered rainfall.
This phenomenon creates favorable conditions for thunderstorm development and moisture-laden winds. The trough acts as a conduit for moisture, enhancing the likelihood of showers and lightning activity across central and western Maharashtra.
While Pune’s Shivajinagar station recorded a maximum of 36.2°C (about 1.3°C below normal), Lohegaon saw a slightly higher 38.6°C, which is still lower than the peak temperatures seen earlier in May. The city has shifted from hot, dry days to a more humid and cloudy pattern, with rainfall events mostly occurring in the evenings. Humidity levels have also remained high, with relative humidity at 66% in the morning and 53% in the evening, contributing to the muggy feel before showers bring relief.
Daily thunderstorms with light to moderate rainfall are expected, especially in the afternoons and evenings. Daytime temperatures will remain 3°C to 4°C below normal, offering respite from the typical May heat. Intervals of sunshine and cloud cover will persist, with occasional gusty winds during thunderstorms.
The cooler, rainier weather is a welcome change for many Punekars, especially after experiencing temperatures above 40°C earlier this month. However, the IMD advises caution during thunderstorms, particularly for those commuting or working outdoors. The increased humidity and wet conditions may also affect daily routines and traffic.
After May 16, the weather is expected to gradually stabilize, with partly cloudy skies and a possibility of isolated showers continuing into the following week. Residents are encouraged to stay updated with daily IMD bulletins for the latest advisories.
