Indapur: Dr. Dattatray Masal Secures Research Role at Purdue University, USA

Dr. Dattatray Masal worked as a compounder in a private hospital and later as a tutor in coaching classes to sustain his studies.

Pune: Dr. Dattatray Masal, a shepherd’s son from Agoti village in Indapur Taluka, has secured a prestigious research position at Purdue University, USA. His journey, filled with struggles and perseverance, serves as an inspiration to students from rural Maharashtra.

Despite financial hardships, Dr. Masal never gave up on his dream of higher education. He worked as a compounder in a private hospital and later as a tutor in coaching classes to sustain his studies. His dedication paid off when he secured the 96th rank in India’s NET JRF exam, earning a government research fellowship.

After completing his Ph.D. in December 2024, Dr. Masal was recently selected as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Purdue University. He has been awarded a research scholarship worth over ₹40 lakh per year.

"Hard work and persistence always pay off. My success is dedicated to my parents, teachers, and well-wishers who supported me at every stage," said Dr. Masal.

Indapur College organized a special felicitation event to honor Dr. Masal’s achievement. Principal Dr. Jeevan Saravade and Professor Jayashree Gatkul led the ceremony, with several faculty members and students in attendance.

Dr. Masal will leave for the USA on Monday morning to begin his research at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

  • 10th Grade: Shivaji Vidyalaya, Varkute Budruk (March 2007) – 71%

  • 12th Grade: Shri Narayandas Ramdas High School, Indapur (March 2009) – 56%

  • B.Sc.: Indapur College (2012) – 81%

  • M.Sc.: Garware College, Pune (2014) – 75%

  • Ph.D.: Chemistry (Completed in December 2024)

  • Selected for Research at Purdue University, USA (March 2025)
