Pune: The holy city of Jejuri saw an overwhelming number of devotees for the Somvati Yatra (pilgrimage), coinciding with Margashirsha Amavasya, year-end holidays, and the annual pilgrimage festival. The event was marked by vibrant traditions, enthusiastic participation, and strict safety measures.
Palkhi Procession
The Somvati Palkhi procession, a highlight of the pilgrimage, commenced at 1 PM with a ceremonial signal given by the Peshwas. The event was graced by dignitaries such as Inamdar Rajendra Peshwe, Sachin Peshwe, Khandekari Mandal President Jalindar Khome, Chief Trustee Abhijit Devkate, and other notable figures.
Devotees Turn Jejuri Golden
The temple circumambulation of the palkhi faced challenges due to the massive crowd, but the enthusiasm of the devotees remained undeterred. The air was filled with chants of Lord Khandoba as devotees scattered turmeric powder freely, symbolizing prosperity and devotion.
As the palkhi exited through the Mahadwar, sacks of turmeric were showered upon it, transforming Jejuri Fort into a golden spectacle. Along the procession route, villagers welcomed the palkhi with intricate rangolis and generous scattering of 'Bhandara' (turmeric).
Ceremonial Bath at Karha River
By 5:30 PM, the palkhi reached the Karha River, where the ceremonial idols of Lord Khandoba were bathed with curd, milk, and river water, accompanied by devotional chants. To ensure safety amidst the large crowd, lifeboats were deployed at the riverbank, underscoring the authorities' meticulous planning for the event.
Devotion Amid Festivities
This year's pilgrimage drew an unprecedented number of devotees, thanks to the overlap of religious and festive holidays. The event not only showcased the vibrant cultural traditions of Jejuri but also highlighted the unwavering devotion of Lord Khandoba's followers.
