Maharashtra is witnessing heavy rainfall for the past two days, with five districts including Pune placed under a red alert.
Pune city saw light to moderate rain, but ghat regions like Tamhini and Koyna recorded extremely heavy showers, raising risks of landslides, flash floods, and dam overflows.
Mumbai and several other districts are under an orange alert, with officials urging citizens and local administrations to remain cautious.
Pune, 18 August 2025: Maharashtra has been battered by continuous heavy rainfall for the past two days, and weather warnings remain in place across several districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Pune, Satara, Kolhapur, Raigad, and Ratnagiri, urging residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel.
In Pune, the city itself has seen only light to moderate showers, Lavale recorded just 8 mm of rain. However, the ghat regions around the city tell a different story. Tamhini has already received 210 mm of rain, Koyna Navja 174 mm, and Ambone 115 mm.
With the Temghar dam now nearly 95% full, authorities have warned of possible overflows affecting low-lying and downstream areas. The steep hill roads and forested terrain are also at risk of landslides and flash floods.
Meanwhile, Mumbai and its suburbs have been drenched since early morning, adding to the hardship of daily commuters. An orange alert has been declared for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Sindhudurg, Latur, Beed, Jalna, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Amravati, Chandrapur, and Gadchiroli. The State Emergency Operations Centre has instructed district administrations to remain on high alert and respond swiftly to any emergencies.
With rivers swelling and reservoirs nearing capacity, officials have appealed to citizens across Maharashtra to remain indoors unless necessary and to follow safety advisories closely.
