Mumbai: The term of Governor-nominated eight members in the Maharashtra Legislative Council will end on Saturday (June 6). Term of the other two members will be ending on June 15. With this upcoming development in the political circle, willing candidates from the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) - the tri-party alliance of Indian National Congress, Nationalist Congress Party and Shiv Sena in Maharashtra - have sprung into action.

In June 2014, as per the government recommendation of then Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, the Governor had appointed 12 members to the Legislative Council. It included six members of NCP, five of Congress and one from the People's Republican Party. Last year, just before the state assembly elections, Rahul Narvekar and Ramrao Vadkute had resigned from the legislative council. Since then, two Governor-nominated seats were vacant. Now, eight members will retire on June 6 and two will retire on June 15.

According to sources, the MVA has agreed to equal distribution of four seats each. However, in the recent legislative council elections, the Congress had contested only one seat instead of their original demand of two seats. Hence, it is speculated that Congress might get one extra seat out of the 12 Governor-nominated seats.

The People's Republican Party under the leadership of Jogendra Kawade has demanded that Congress party should keep its promise given to the Republican Party. "They had promised to give representation to the Republican Party in the Legislative Council and now they should honour it," Kawade said.
