World Second Largest data centre inaugurated in Navi Mumbai

The Union Minister for Communications, Electronics and IT, Ravi Shankar Prasad, announced that the second-largest data centre of the world was inaugurated in Mumbai today. He added that India holds great potential to become a vibrant data economy and a hub for the data centre in the world. Via twitter Mr Shankar told, “Delighted that the second-largest data centre of the world was inaugurated in Mumbai today. This world-class infrastructure has been developed by the Hiranandani Group.”

The world’s largest data centre is at Langfang, China. It is located in 6.3 million square feet of space. The world’s second-largest data centre which is in Mumbai occupies 600-acres of space in Mumbai. Total power consumption of the data centre is around 210 MW. The centre will get its solar power plant soon.

What is the data centre?
The storage systems, routers, servers, switches are placed at data centres. They store data and work as a centralized unit and shares data with different entities. Collection, storing and processing of the data happens at such data centres. 

A decade ago, in India, digital data was around 40,000 petabytes. This number has gone up to 2.3 million petabytes by 2020. The digital data in India is growing twice faster than in the world. 1000 Terabytes is equal to one petabyte.
