Pune: In a major crackdown on electricity bill defaulters, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL / Mahavitaran) has disconnected the power supply of 51,735 consumers across five districts under the Pune regional division. The total outstanding dues from domestic, commercial, and industrial consumers have reached ₹310.84 crore.
Despite multiple reminders and appeals, many consumers have failed to clear their pending electricity bills, prompting Mahavitaran to take strict action. Over the past 35 days, power supply to thousands of defaulting consumers has been cut off. Special inspection teams have also been deployed to monitor unauthorized power usage in disconnected premises.
“If any defaulter is found using electricity through illegal means, such as drawing power from neighbors or alternative sources, strict legal action is being taken under the Indian Electricity Act, 2003 (Sections 135/138),” a Mahavitaran official stated.
Massive Outstanding Dues Across Five Districts
As per Mahavitaran’s data, Pune district alone accounts for ₹199.99 crore of pending bills, followed by Solapur (₹44.07 crore), Sangli (₹24.95 crore), Kolhapur (₹20.80 crore), and Satara (₹20.40 crore).

The recent disconnection drive has affected:
42,073 consumers in Pune district
1,920 consumers in Satara
4,279 consumers in Solapur
1,490 consumers in Kolhapur
1,973 consumers in Sangli
Strict Monitoring and Inspections by Mahavitaran Officials
Mahavitaran’s regional teams, led by Pune Regional Director Bhujang Khandare and Chief Engineers Rajendra Pawar (Pune), Swapnil Katkar (Kolhapur), and Dharmaraj Pethkar (Baramati), are personally monitoring the recovery process and visiting sub-divisional and branch offices to ensure prompt action against defaulters.
