Pune: The Shikrapur Police have successfully solved a 10-month-old murder case, arresting four suspects linked to the death of Madhav Dashrath Karde, aged 40, whose body was discovered near the Koregaon Dhanore Canal in Jategaon Khurd, Shirur, on March 11, 2024. The police investigation revealed that the murder occurred following an altercation over alcohol consumption.

On the evening of March 11, 2024, Karde visited Bhujbalvasti in Sanaswadi for drinking. During the gathering, an argument broke out between Karde and Ramesh Waman Hargude (46), a resident of Gawhalevasti, Sanaswadi. The verbal spat escalated, and Hargude reportedly struck Karde on the head with a wooden stick, resulting in his death.

A woman involved in the illegal liquor business at the location saw the incident and, along with three relatives, disposed of the body. The group loaded Karde’s body into a tempo and abandoned it near the Koregaon Dhanore Canal.

The case initially recorded as an accidental death took a dramatic turn when a conscientious police officer raised suspicions about foul play. Following rigorous questioning of the suspects, police extracted confessions detailing the events of the night. The accused include:

  • Ramesh Waman Hargude

  • A woman involved in the liquor trade

  • Three of her relatives (two of whom were arrested)

The suspects were charged with murder and destruction of evidence. One accused remains at large, and efforts are underway to locate and apprehend them.

The incident occurred at an illicit liquor den, sparking allegations that some police officers had vested interests in protecting the illegal business. Rumors suggest the case was suppressed due to these connections. However, it was brought to light through the diligence of a committed officer.

Calls for a comprehensive inquiry into the role of local police officials and their connections to illegal activities have grown louder. “The timely action of a responsible officer is commendable, but an internal investigation into police involvement and the operations of illicit businesses in Shikrapur is essential,” said concerned citizens.

The investigation is being led by PSI Mahesh Dongre under the guidance of Inspector Dipartan Gaikwad.
