Pune: The unexplained deaths of pigs in Kothrud have raised serious concerns, as five more pigs died on Tuesday (February 11), bringing the total to 47. Despite samples being sent for testing four days ago, the report is still pending.

For the past 10 days, dead pigs have been discovered in the drain at Bhartinagar, Kothrud. The delay in action by the municipal corporation has led to a severe stench in the area, leaving residents questioning the cause of these deaths.

In Kothrud, two to three families are engaged in pig farming, yet none have filed any complaints despite the death of 47 pigs. The Kothrud-Bavdhan Ward Office and the Health Department appear to be lacking coordination, resulting in a lack of information sharing among officials.

After repeated complaints from residents, the Ward Office finally called a meeting on Tuesday, attended by officials from both departments and local citizens. During the meeting, residents were provided with official contact details. The pig farmers were invited, but none attended the discussion.

Assistant Municipal Commissioner Vijay Naykal stated: “A coordination committee has been formed between the Health Department and the Regional Office to ensure a systematic investigation. Drain water samples have also been sent for testing, but the report is still awaited.”

Dr. Sarika Funde, Veterinary Officer, revealed: “The dead pigs were sent for post-mortem examination, but due to decomposition, the autopsy could not be conducted.”
