Pune: A mysterious underground sound accompanied by mild tremors was experienced in several villages of Purandar taluka on Tuesday (January 7) at exactly 2:14 PM. The sudden and unexplained phenomenon created panic among residents, who initially suspected it to be an earthquake. The exact cause of the sound, however, remains unknown, leaving villagers in a state of fear and uncertainty.

The incident was reported in multiple villages, including Walhe, Nira, Adachiwadi, Wagdarwadi, Sukalwadi, Pingori, Daundaj, Harni, Jeur, Mandki, Rakh, and Pisurti. Tuesday being the weekly market day in Walhe, the sudden sound and vibrations disrupted the market activities, causing vendors and customers to flee in panic.

Local police authorities were immediately informed. Inspector Deepak Wakchaure of Jejuri Police Station confirmed that the mysterious underground sound was reported in several villages spanning the Jejuri, Walhe, Nira, and Saswad regions. He reassured residents, urging them not to panic and to stay inside sturdy houses as a safety measure.

The exact source of the sound and tremors is yet to be determined, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Meanwhile, the incident has left villagers anxious about the possibility of further occurrences.

In 2020, a jet of an Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter jet had caused a sonic boom over the city of Bengaluru, sending its residents into a panic. "It was a routine IAF test flight involving a supersonic profile, which took off from Bengaluru airport and flew in the allotted airspace outside the city limits," Ministry of Defence had later clarified.
