Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant stated on Friday that no petition had been filed in the Supreme Court seeking its intervention regarding the alleged police excesses during the July 20 crackdown on student protesters in the national capital.

He criticised as “reckless” the reports claiming that the court had declined to list such a case.

"In the last two days, a completely false statement was made that a matter was filed, and the media is absolutely free from all responsibility and falsely reporting that the Chief Justice refused to list the matter," he said.

By 10 a.m. in the morning, not a single petition had been filed.

There was only one representation… submitted by Mishra or someone else. How can I treat a mere representation as a writ petition? And yet people begin reporting this irresponsibly," the CJI remarked while lawyers were mentioning their matters for urgent listing on Friday (July 24, 2026).

On Wednesday, July 22, 2026, a lawyer requested an urgent hearing on the police action taken against students during the protest march led by the Cockroach Janta Party in New Delhi on July 20.

The lawyer stated that he had video recordings purportedly showing police brutality and asked that the matter be listed the next day (Thursday), noting that the students were present.

He alleged that the students had been subjected to excessive force by the police during the demonstration. The Chief Justice of India rejected the request and clarified that the Bench was not prepared to review video footage at the mentioning stage.

We are not interested in videos; we do not have time to watch them. We do not want to see any videos," the CJI stated.

When the counsel repeated that students had been assaulted and again pointed to the video evidence, the CJI responded, "Do not waste our time. We have no intention of watching any videos."
