Chennai-based aerospace startup The ePlane Company has unveiled PT-01, a full-scale prototype of an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, marking a step towards the commercial deployment of flying taxis in India. The company plans to initially introduce the aircraft for emergency medical transport before expanding to passenger and cargo services.
According to the company, PT-01 will undergo ground testing later this year, followed by pilotless flight trials expected in 2027. Subject to regulatory approvals and successful testing, commercial operations are targeted to begin in 2028. The prototype was unveiled at the company's manufacturing facility on the IIT Madras Discovery Campus in Chennai.
Unlike conventional aircraft, the electric-powered eVTOL is designed to take off and land vertically, allowing it to operate from compact spaces such as hospital helipads without requiring a runway. The aircraft has a claimed flight range of up to 110 kilometres on a single battery charge and is designed to carry one pilot along with a payload of up to 200 kilograms.
The prototype incorporates multiple electric motors, allowing the aircraft to continue operating in the event of a single motor failure, according to the company.
The company said its first commercial application will focus on air ambulance services, enabling faster transportation of patients, medical staff and emergency equipment between healthcare facilities. Passenger transport for urban mobility is planned as a later phase.
The launch comes as aviation companies worldwide continue developing eVTOL aircraft for urban transport and emergency response. Several manufacturers in North America, Europe and the Middle East are working towards commercial deployment, while aviation regulators are developing certification standards for the emerging technology.
Before entering service, PT-01 will need to complete flight testing and obtain regulatory certification. Industry experts have identified infrastructure, battery technology, air traffic integration and certification as some of the key challenges facing commercial eVTOL operations.
