Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to take stringent action against both individuals dumping debris and officials neglecting their duty to curb such activities. The move comes after repeated incidents of debris being dumped in riverbeds, roadsides, and open spaces, causing environmental hazards and contributing to flooding during the monsoon.

Deputy Commissioner of the Solid Waste Management Department, Sandeep Kadam, revealed that officers and employees of PMC’s 15 ward offices have been tasked with monitoring and controlling debris dumping in their jurisdictions. However, negligence on their part has led to the administration issuing a warning that disciplinary action will be taken if debris is found in their areas.

The PMC has also established patrolling squads comprising municipal officials from the construction department, solid waste management department, and assistant municipal commissioners. These squads are empowered to register cases under the 2017 bylaws, Section 52 of the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016, and environmental laws. Penalties will be imposed on offenders, and their building permissions may also be revoked.

The city is currently witnessing a surge in construction activities, and instances of debris, including soil, stones, bricks, and other waste, being dumped at unauthorized locations have risen significantly. Such activities disrupt water flow during the rainy season, leading to flooding in several areas.

Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Kadam emphasized the PMC’s commitment to curbing illegal debris dumping. “Patrolling squads have been formed to identify and penalize offenders. Officials failing to take appropriate action in their jurisdiction will also face disciplinary proceedings,” Kadam stated.

In addition to fines, offenders may face legal consequences and the cancellation of construction permits. The administration has urged citizens to report any incidents of illegal dumping to aid in maintaining the city’s cleanliness and safety.
