No Flow Meters, No Clarity: 70 Million Liters Water Sent, But How Much Reaches Wadgaon Sheri?

Installing flow meters would require a water supply shutdown for one to two days, disrupting water distribution for following eight days.

Pune: The residents of Wadgaon Sheri are facing uncertainty over how much water they actually receive, as there are no flow meters installed at the Tata Guardroom water tanks. Despite 70 million liters of water being sent daily from the Cantonment Pumping Station and Bhama Askhed Water Project, a large amount may be lost due to leakage, raising concerns over the efficiency of water distribution.

According to water supply officials, it takes longer than expected to fill the tanks, leading to speculations that the actual water supply from Cantonment Pumping Station is lower than intended. This delay affects further water distribution planning in the area.

The Tata Guardroom water supply center has three water tanks, of which:

  • One tank supplies Chandan Nagar

  • Two tanks supply the rest of Vadgaon Sheri

  • Despite serving a population of 50,000, the absence of flow meters means that officials cannot track the exact amount of water reaching these tanks.

Major Problems in the Water Supply System

  • No flow meters to measure water supply

  • Low tank height prevents adequate supply to higher areas

  • Slow water flow rate causes delays in tank refilling

  • Several pipelines under the equal water distribution scheme remain unused

  • Old and deteriorated water distribution infrastructure
Lack of a high-pressure water pumping system for elevated areas.

Former corporator Shweta Khose Galande held a meeting with water supply officials at Bund Garden, demanding the urgent installation of flow meters to monitor the actual water supply to Wadgaon Sheri.

Eknath Gadekar, Executive Engineer, Water Supply Department stated, "Installing flow meters would require a water supply shutdown for one to two days, potentially disrupting water distribution for the following eight days. Due to this challenge, the process has been delayed."
