Following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistan once again breached the ceasefire agreement by opening fire at multiple locations along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. Indian forces promptly retaliated, escalating tensions along the disputed border.
Reports confirm that Pakistani troops initiated small arms firing from several posts in the Leepa Valley area of Pakistan-administered Kashmir and other sectors including Kupwara, Rajouri, and Poonch. The Indian Army responded effectively, ensuring no casualties on the Indian side so far. This exchange of fire marks a serious violation of the 2003 ceasefire pact between the two nations.
In response to the rising security concerns, Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi was dispatched to Srinagar and Udhampur to assess the situation firsthand. His visit aims to bolster troop morale and coordinate enhanced security measures along the volatile border.
Pakistan’s actions come amid heightened diplomatic and military tensions after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which India attributes to Pakistan-based militant groups. India has since taken strong retaliatory steps, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, closing the Attari-Wagah border, and downgrading diplomatic ties.
While Pakistan claims that firing was limited to “post-to-post” exchanges without targeting civilians, India maintains that these ceasefire violations are deliberate provocations aimed at destabilizing the region. The United Nations and international community have called for restraint from both sides to prevent further escalation.
The Indian Army remains on high alert, conducting combing operations in affected areas and preparing for any eventuality. Security forces continue to focus on counter-terrorism efforts within Jammu and Kashmir while managing the fragile peace along the LoC.
