Pune: The Nilay Housing Society in Jadhavwadi, Chikhali, continues to grapple with severe water shortages despite having two municipal water connections. The limited supply has forced the residents to purchase water from local farmers, leading to a substantial additional monthly expense of ₹75,000.
The residential complex, which houses 240 apartments, has been relying on two municipal water connections for the past year. However, with water being supplied only on alternate days, the demand far exceeds the available supply. The society had initially depended on four borewells, but due to the depletion of groundwater during the summer, only one remains operational, which is insufficient to meet the needs of all residents.
A year and a half ago, the society was ordering 15 water tankers daily to sustain its water needs. To mitigate the escalating costs and ensure a steady water supply, the management has now installed a pipeline system to source water directly from local farmers. However, this alternative solution has resulted in an additional financial burden, with the society incurring ₹75,000 per month on water procurement.
Residents have expressed growing concerns over the long-standing issue, urging the municipal authorities to take immediate measures to provide a more stable and sufficient water supply.
"Since the establishment of the housing society, water scarcity has been a major challenge. The two municipal water connections have provided some relief, but with the high number of apartments, the supply remains inadequate. We are currently sourcing water from local farmers through a pipeline system," said Ramesh Patil, Chairman of Nilay Housing Society.
