Pune: Following the removal of garbage bins from various parts of the city, an increase in waste dumping in open spaces has been observed. To tackle this issue, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s (PCMC) health department has identified 80 problematic locations under its eight regional offices. These areas will undergo a comprehensive cleanliness drive, including changes to garbage collection schedules, beautification efforts, and strict enforcement measures against violators.

Measures to Address Open Dumping

Health department officials have begun inspecting areas where citizens frequently dispose of garbage in open spaces or by roadsides. Plans are underway to increase the number of garbage collection vehicles and adjust their schedules to ensure timely waste collection. Additionally, ten specific locations under each regional office will be assigned to dedicated officers and staff for monitoring and upkeep. Citizens found dumping waste in these areas will face fines, ensuring accountability and deterrence.

Preparations for Swachh Survekshan 2025

In preparation for the central government’s annual "Swachh Survekshan" cleanliness survey, the PCMC health department has initiated proactive measures to improve hygiene and sanitation across the city. The survey, conducted in February, evaluates cities based on cleanliness standards in slums, marketplaces, public toilets, and roads. PCMC aims to secure higher rankings by addressing key sanitation challenges in advance.

Public Restroom Accessibility at Petrol Pumps

A shortage of public restrooms on major roads and internal areas has been a persistent issue, causing significant inconvenience to citizens, especially women. To alleviate this, all petrol pumps in the city will be required to provide operational restrooms for public use. The health department will issue formal notices to pump operators, mandating restroom accessibility.

Assistant Commissioner Ajinkya Yele stated, “Inspections will be conducted after one month to ensure all petrol pump restrooms are functional and hygienic. Non-compliance will result in notices and penalties.”

Beautification Efforts to Enhance City Image

As part of the waste-free city initiative, the health department has announced plans to beautify the identified 80 locations. Assistant Commissioner Yele emphasized that these efforts aim to improve the city’s aesthetics and foster a sense of civic responsibility among residents.
