Pune: With the festival of colors around the corner, health experts are advising people to be cautious while choosing colors for Dhulivandan and Rangpanchami celebrations. The use of synthetic colors containing chemicals and heavy metals can lead to severe skin, eye, and respiratory problems.

The market is flooded with various types of colors, and unfortunately, many of them contain toxic substances. Dermatologists and ophthalmologists have warned that using chemical-based colors can cause rashes, eye infections, and even long-term health complications.

Why Are Artificial Colors Harmful?

According to Dr. Jennifer Kolte, most colors available in the market are chemical-based and harmful to the skin and hair. Some even contain metallic particles that can trigger allergic reactions, skin irritation, and eye infections.

Ophthalmologist Dr. Ashwini Misal further explains that chemical colors can severely impact eye health, leading to dryness, irritation, and damage to the cornea.

Tips to Protect Yourself This Festive Season:

  • Choose herbal or natural colors instead of synthetic ones.

  • Apply coconut oil or moisturizing lotion before playing with colors.

  • Wear protective eyewear to prevent colors from entering the eyes.

  • Use sunscreen to avoid skin damage from sun exposure and colors.

  • Avoid using kerosene, petrol, or turpentine to remove colors.

  • Wash off colors with lukewarm water and avoid scrubbing the skin too hard.
