On Thursday, Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita told the Rajya Sabha that spending on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign trips has exceeded Rs 74.58 crore in 2026 so far, and that total expenditure on his overseas visits since 2021 has crossed Rs 550 crore.
In her written response, Margherita indicated that, among the trips for which this year’s figures are available, the Norway segment of the Prime Minister’s five-country tour in May recorded the highest spending at Rs 17.46 crore.
According to the reply, expenditure on the Prime Minister's foreign visits:
2025 - ₹ 180 crore,
2024 - ₹ 109 crore,
2023 - ₹ 93 crore,
2022 - ₹ 55 crore;
2021 - ₹ 36 crore;
The Ministry also noted that several expenditure figures for 2026 are provisional and will be finalised after settlement of bills, while expenditure for the France visit in June is still being compiled.
The figures indicated that 2025 saw the highest yearly spending of ₹ 187. 83 on the Prime Minister’s overseas trips.
That year encompassed trips to France, the United States, Mauritius, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, Cyprus, Canada, Croatia, Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, Namibia, the United Kingdom, the Maldives, China, Japan, Bhutan, South Africa, Jordan, Oman, and Ethiopia.
Cost incurred on some of these visits was:
• France: ₹25.60 crore
• Brazil: ₹17.72 crore
• US: ₹16.55 crore
• Saudi Arabia: ₹15.54 crore
• China: ₹10.60 crore
• UK: ₹9.92 crore
The MEA stated that Prime Minister Modi’s high-level trips reinforce India’s involvement at bilateral, regional, and global levels.
The ministry noted that these visits have advanced collaborations in fields including technology, innovation, trade and investment, defence, energy cooperation, and the development of resilient supply chains.
The ministry also presented country-specific information on the memoranda of understanding (MoUs) concluded during these trips. It stated that India attracted $381.8 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) between April 2021 and December 2025.
