Pune, 1st October 2025: Illegal parking has once again come under the scanner in Pune as the Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to directly recover fines collected by the Traffic Department. The decision comes after revenue from penalties crashed this year, raising concerns over weak enforcement on city roads.

Between April and July 2023, the Corporation received just ₹12.40 lakh as its share of fines from the traffic police, a steep fall compared to ₹9.59 crore collected in 2022-23. Over the last five years, fines worth nearly ₹21 crore have been transferred to the civic body, which uses the money for city development. Officials say the sudden dip has forced the Corporation to step in and take control of fine recovery.

Civic authorities point out that roadside parking remains a routine problem due to limited facilities, but poor enforcement has worsened congestion. To fix this, PMC’s Anti-Encroachment Department will now coordinate with traffic police to penalise violators more effectively.

Traffic police recently shared a list of illegal parking hotspots with the Corporation during Ganesh Utsav, highlighting areas where vehicles frequently block roads. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Vijayakumar Magar said stricter penalties would follow for cars parked in no-parking zones or obstructing traffic.

Despite introducing one-way routes in some areas, parking on both sides of roads continues to choke movement across the city. Citizens have demanded stricter enforcement and long-term parking solutions, warning that congestion will only get worse unless immediate steps are taken.
