Pune: Pune’s political landscape is on the brink of a major shift as five former corporators from a prominent political party are likely to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Sources indicate that these corporators, along with a senior Pune-based political leader, recently visited Mumbai to hold discussions with BJP’s state-level leadership. An official announcement of their entry into the BJP is expected in the coming days, either in Mumbai or Pune.

The BJP's success in Pune has been notable. After a slight setback in the Lok Sabha elections, the party bounced back strongly in the Assembly elections, securing a complete victory in Pune. This continued dominance has raised speculation about the BJP's stronghold in the forthcoming Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) elections.

In 2017, the BJP had achieved a clear majority in the PMC elections, a feat they are likely to replicate. Aware of the BJP's growing strength, these five former corporators appear to have decided to join hands with the ruling party. According to insiders, the BJP has assured them of key positions and candidacy in the upcoming municipal elections.

The group of defecting leaders includes two women and three men, some of whom are also eyeing seats in the next Assembly elections. This strategic move is expected to bolster the BJP’s position in the PMC and strengthen its political influence in Pune.

With local self-government elections likely to take place in the coming months, these developments are crucial. By aligning with the BJP, the former corporators are positioning themselves for a stronger foothold in Pune’s political arena.
