Pune: In light of recent safety concerns on hillocks and at black spots across Pune, the police department has announced plans to enhance security through advanced surveillance and lighting measures.
This initiative follows a commitment made by former Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis to allocate dedicated funds for securing these vulnerable areas.
Under Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar's supervision, over 13 hillocks and more than seven black spots have been identified for immediate safety upgrades. A report detailing these measures will be submitted to the state government on December 2.
Surveillance and Panic Alert System
As part of the initiative, 600 state-of-the-art cameras, including PTZ, fixed, ANPR, and facial recognition cameras, will be installed. Panic buttons linked to the Pune Police Control Room will also be deployed in these areas. Activating a panic button will:
Alert the police control room.
Begin live video streaming from the site.
Record footage from one minute before and after the button press.
Put nearby surveillance cameras on alert mode.
Additionally, patrol vehicles will receive alarm signals from panic buttons, enabling faster response times.
Additional Security Features
A "Two-Way PA System" (microphones and speakers) will be set up at key locations.
Over 177 high-intensity floodlights will be installed to improve nighttime visibility.
Seven specialized mobile surveillance vehicles equipped with drone cameras will be deployed.
Connectivity will be ensured via mobile networks, or radio frequency in areas with poor signal.
Hillocks and Black Spots Identified
The identified locations include Hanuman Tekdi, Old Tunnel Ghat, Taljai, Sutardara, ARAI Hill, Aranyeshwar Temple, Baner Hill, Bolai Mata Temple, Jogeshwari Temple, Vetal Baba Hill, Chatuhshrungi Hill, Bopdev Ghat, Parsi Ground, Parvati, and Canal Road.
The project, estimated to cost ₹70 crore, also includes a five-year maintenance plan. These measures aim to prevent unauthorized activities and ensure prompt police response to emergencies.
Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar stated: "More than 13 hillocks and seven black spots have been identified for safety enhancements using CCTV and floodlights. A detailed report will be submitted to the Home Department after another round of surveys."
