Pune: A five-story hostel built for students from backward classes in Pune remains non-operational, even three years after its construction. Located in Vishrantwadi, the hostel was built in 2021 by the Department of Social Justice and Special Assistance at a cost of several crores and has a capacity for 500 students.
However, due to administrative hurdles and lack of coordination among the Social Welfare Department, Public Works Department (PWD), and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the building has not been handed over to the Social Justice Department for operation.
The hostel's completion certificate has been delayed because the PWD did not secure a "No Objection Certificate" (NOC) from the PMC during construction. Students and organizations have repeatedly raised concerns about the prolonged delay, citing the critical need for affordable and secure accommodation for students pursuing education in Pune.
Despite protests and appeals to officials, including Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, progress has been slow. Officials have assured that the handover process will be completed soon, and the hostel will be operational.
Students, particularly female students, have expressed concerns about safety and the financial burden of private accommodations. Student organizations have warned of intensified protests if the issue is not resolved promptly.
