Pune Market Yard: Vegetable Prices Down, Cucumbers and Bitter Gourds See Price Hike

The fruit market noted increased prices for oranges, guavas, and melons due to limited availability. Flower market faced a decline in prices.

Pune: The Pune Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) at Gultekdi reported a significant influx of vegetables and fruits on Sunday, January 5. Around 90 to 100 truckloads of fresh produce arrived from across Maharashtra and other states, leading to fluctuations in prices. Vegetables like tomatoes, ginger, and cabbage experienced a notable drop in prices due to oversupply, while cucumber and bitter gourd saw a price increase.

Vegetables from Karnataka, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh made up a large portion of the supply, including green chilies, cabbage, and drumsticks. Additionally, significant quantities of garlic, peas, and carrots were transported from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Local farmers also contributed significantly, particularly with onions, tomatoes, and okra.

Price Trends

The market saw reduced prices for popular vegetables:

  • Tomatoes: ₹100–120 per 10 kg

  • Cabbage: ₹60–80 per 10 kg

  • Ginger: ₹280–300 per 10 kg

Conversely, cucumbers (₹200–300 per 10 kg) and bitter gourds (₹400–450 per 10 kg) experienced a price hike. Leafy vegetables such as coriander and fenugreek were available in ample quantities, although prices for gram stalks remained higher than average.

Fruit Market Insights

The fruit market noted increased prices for oranges, guavas, and melons due to limited availability. Meanwhile, stable prices for lemons, custard apples, and sapodillas indicated consistent demand and supply.

Flower Market Downturn

The flower market faced a decline in prices despite an increase in supply, attributed to lower-than-expected consumer demand. Prices of marigolds ranged from ₹10 to ₹30 per kilogram, while premium flowers like Dutch roses were priced between ₹100 and ₹150 for 20 pieces.

Traders at the APMC attributed these changes to seasonal fluctuations and transportation dynamics, urging consumers to take advantage of lower prices while they last.
