  1. MahaMetro has submitted the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a proposed Nigdi–Chakan metro route to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.

  2. The 35–40 km route will connect key residential, IT, and industrial areas, including Bhakti-Shakti, Bhosari, Wakad, and Chakan.

  3. After approvals from the state and central governments, construction could begin within 1–1.5 years.

Pimpri-Chinchwad is set to see a major boost to its metro network, with MahaMetro submitting the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a proposed Nigdi–Chakan route to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). The new line aims to extend the current Bhakti-Shakti to Nigdi corridor directly to Chakan, covering a distance of around 35–40 km.

Once completed, this route is expected to connect nearly 75% of the city to the metro network, providing significant relief from daily traffic congestion. Pimpri-Chinchwad’s population, currently over 3 million, is growing rapidly, increasing the need for improved public transport links.

The proposed route will cover key residential, IT, and industrial zones, including Wakad, Pimple Saudagar, Pimple Gurav, Bhosari, and Chakan. It will also create major junctions at Nashik Phata, connecting to Bhosari, Chakan, and Pune city, and at the Bhakti-Shakti metro station in Nigdi, linking to Ravet, Wakad, and other areas.

Officials say this corridor will be vital for industrial, educational, and residential connectivity, especially along the Bhakti-Shakti to Chakan stretch. It will also support balanced urban growth and strengthen public transport infrastructure in the region.

According to MahaMetro Executive Director Dr. Hemant Sonawane, the DPR has been handed over to PCMC and will now require approvals from the municipal general body, followed by the state and central governments. “Once the permissions are secured, construction work will begin. The approval process may take a year to a year and a half,” he said.
