Pune: The number of ‘Ti’ mobile toilet buses for women in Pune has drastically reduced, with only 3 out of the 13 originally deployed buses currently in operation. Now, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to introduce a paid model to continue running these mobile toilets.
The 13 ‘Ti’ mobile toilet buses were heavily used, and their maintenance was funded through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions. However, over the past year, CSR funding has diminished, leading to a gradual reduction in operational mobile toilets, leaving only 3 currently in use.
To address this decline, the PMC has decided to restore and repair the non-functional buses. However, due to the lack of CSR funds, the administration has proposed charging users for toilet access. Additionally, revenue will be generated through advertisements placed on the buses to sustain their operation.
The Solid Waste Management Department of PMC initially invited tenders for managing these mobile toilets. However, since only one bid was received, the PMC has decided to reissue the tender. Once the tender process is complete, the mobile toilets will be operated under a paid model, and women will have to pay to use them.
PMC Solid Waste Management Department Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Kadam said, "The ‘Ti’ mobile toilets for women were maintained using CSR funds. Due to a lack of CSR support, this service will now become chargeable. The tender process has already been initiated."
