Pune, 5th August 2025: A disturbing case has emerged from Pune's Kothrud area, where three women who assisted a domestic violence survivor are alleging illegal detention and abuse by the police. Despite their complaints, the Pune Police have refused to file an FIR, stating that no crime took place.

The incident began when a married woman from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, facing domestic violence, sought shelter in Pune. Local social workers helped her access the 'One Stop Sakhi Centre' and enroll in a skill development course to rebuild her life.

However, without prior notice, a team of police from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, in coordination with Kothrud Police, allegedly detained the three women who had helped the survivor. The women say they were taken into custody without a warrant or explanation, had their phones seized and passwords changed, and were physically assaulted.

According to their statement, the woman’s in-laws used their influence, especially a retired police sub-inspector from Sambhajinagar who is a relative, to target them. They also claim they were subjected to caste-based slurs and treated like criminals.

The women have attempted to file a case under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, citing a violation of legal and human rights. But even after 48 hours, no FIR has been registered. Police authorities have officially responded, stating there’s no credible evidence or eyewitnesses to support the allegations.

Police Inspector Sandeep Deshmane said that if any facts are confirmed during further inquiry, appropriate action will be taken.

Meanwhile, public outcry is growing. The Republican Party of India (Athawale faction), MNS, and the Matang Samaj Seva Trust have demanded a detailed investigation. Union Minister of State for Social Justice, Ramdas Athawale, reportedly called and directed strict legal action against those responsible.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Sambhaji Kadam issued a statement saying, “The allegations made by the women are baseless. No such incident took place, and there are no eyewitnesses. Hence, an FIR will not be registered.”

The incident has raised serious concerns about how victims and those who help them can be targeted, and how the police may misuse their powers under pressure.
