Pune: In a bid to curb street crimes and provide a sense of security to citizens, Pune Police have launched the "Constable on Patrolling" (COP-24) initiative.
The plan aims to increase police presence on roads, prevent crimes, and ensure quick response to emergencies. A task force of 726 police personnel has been appointed for this purpose, who will patrol the city day and night.
The COP-24 initiative is a centralized effort to enhance the existing patrolling system in Pune. While every police station in the city already has designated patrolling officers (Beat Marshals), the COP-24 scheme focuses on deploying resources effectively across the city and its suburbs.
Under this initiative, 234 police personnel have been assigned to patrolling vehicles (CR Mobile), and 492 personnel will patrol on motorcycles. All personnel have been appointed from the Shivajinagar police headquarters.
The program’s core objective is to prevent crimes such as theft, robbery, and other serious street offenses by increasing police visibility in public spaces. Additionally, the initiative emphasizes quick response times to emergencies.
Currently, the average response time is seven minutes, but efforts are underway to reduce this to five minutes. Citizens can report emergencies by contacting the police helpline number 112, ensuring swift assistance.
Administrative oversight of the initiative has been entrusted to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch), who will supervise the patrolling operations and monitor their efficiency. The patrolling system will operate in two shifts, covering day and night, ensuring continuous police presence across the city and its suburban areas.
Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar highlighted the importance of the initiative, stating that it would deliver significant results in reducing street crimes and fostering public confidence. He also emphasized that the 24-hour patrolling system, combined with a quick response mechanism, will play a crucial role in deterring potential crimes.
