Pune: Erandwane Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal has launched an unconventional protest to address the health concerns caused by pigeons in the city. The Mandal, known for its civic initiatives, took to the riverbed road near Baba Bhide Bridge to raise awareness about the dangers of feeding pigeons in public areas.

The issue stems from a shift in ritual practices observed during "Dashakriya," a ceremony performed for departed souls. Traditionally, crows are expected to eat the "Pind" (offering), but recently, pigeons have been pecking at it first, disrupting the ritual. The Mandal members pointed out that this occurrence reflects a deeper issue of excessive pigeon feeding in the city.

At the protest site near the Ashtabhuja Durgamata Temple, Mandal members interacted with bird enthusiasts who were feeding pigeons. They politely requested these individuals, with folded hands, to cease the practice for the sake of public health. Some participants even took an oath not to feed pigeons in the future.

Prashant Velankar, President of the Ganeshotsav Mandal, explained the health hazards posed by pigeon droppings, which contain harmful pathogens linked to respiratory illnesses. He urged the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to take strict action.

The Mandal has specifically demanded the installation of warning boards at three key locations along the riverbed where pigeons congregate. The boards should caution against feeding pigeons and mention the penalties for non-compliance. PMC has already enacted a ban on pigeon feeding in public areas and promised strict action against violators.
