Pune: Rising fuel prices, enhanced environmental consciousness, and cost-effectiveness have fueled a significant shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) among Pune residents. In 2024 alone, the city recorded the sale of 92,402 EVs, a substantial leap of nearly 60,000 vehicles compared to 2023.

Currently, Pune boasts nearly 3 lakh EVs on its roads, a notable development given the city's total registered vehicle count of around 40 lakh. While EVs still account for a smaller share, their adoption rate is accelerating rapidly.

EV Growth Trends

The adoption of EVs in Pune has steadily increased:

  • 2021: 8,668 vehicles

  • 2022: 30,653 vehicles

  • 2023: 33,960 vehicles

  • 2024: 92,402 vehicles

Two-wheelers dominate the EV market, with sales reaching 82,228 in 2024, compared to 30,459 in 2023. Four-wheelers also saw a rise, with 6,675 sold in 2024 compared to 2,682 in the previous year. However, buses and auto-rickshaws continue to lag in adoption rates.

Infrastructure Development

The number of charging stations in Pune is also expanding, with 40 currently operational and 45 more planned.

Key Factors Driving EV Adoption

  • Increased Manufacturing: A rise in the number of EV manufacturers and options available.

  • Cost Efficiency: Significant fuel cost savings.

  • Improved Access: Availability of charging stations has improved.

  • Environmental Concerns: EVs are eco-friendly, reducing pollution levels.

“Waiving motor vehicle tax on EVs has significantly lowered their cost. Additionally, increased production has boosted sales,” said Swapnil Bhosale, Deputy Regional Transport Officer, Pune.

“Using EVs saves fuel and money while curbing pollution. It is essential for more citizens to adopt EVs,” said Purva Parmar, a student.
