Pune: The number of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases in Pune has reached alarming levels, with four new cases reported today, taking the total to 111. Among the new patients, one is undergoing intensive care in the ICU.

Concerned by the rising numbers, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated measures to improve water quality and reduce further risks. In response, automated meters will be installed on wells in areas like Sinhagad Road and Nanded City to monitor the chlorine levels in the water supplied from dams.

Currently, water supplied to local residents is disinfected manually, but there have been challenges in estimating the correct amount of disinfectant. The new system will ensure proper and real-time monitoring to improve water safety.

Four new GBS patients have been admitted to Kamla Nehru Hospital, where one of them is receiving treatment in the ICU. Injections required for treating GBS have also been made available at the hospital, and free treatment is being offered to patients.

Since the outbreak began, 111 cases of GBS have been reported in Pune. While some patients are being treated at government facilities, others are receiving care at private hospitals.

• Shreeyans Hospital: 02 patients

• 13 other hospitals: 1 patient each

The cases have been distributed across various age groups:

• 0 to 9 years: 19 patients

• 10 to 19 years: 15 patients

• 20 to 29 years: 20 patients

• 30 to 39 years: 13 patients

• 40 to 49 years: 12 patients

• 50 to 59 years: 13 patients

• 60 to 69 years: 08 patients

• 70 years and above: 01 patient

PMC officials believe that the installation of automated monitoring systems will help mitigate further cases. Kamla Nehru Hospital has assured citizens that they are equipped to provide the required treatments, including free care for those in need.
