Pune: Following a tragic fire incident involving a private tempo traveler bus in Hinjewadi, the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has taken immediate steps to strengthen private bus safety regulations. A citywide inspection drive has been launched, with rapid response teams deployed to check compliance with safety norms. Additionally, an urgent meeting of private bus owners will be held to reinforce safety protocols, according to RTO officials.

Pune serves as a major transport hub, with over 1,000 private buses operating daily, ferrying passengers to various parts of Maharashtra. The summer season increases the risk of fire incidents, making thorough fitness inspections crucial. However, reports indicate that many private bus operators neglect essential safety measures, contributing to preventable accidents.

To address this, the RTO has instructed private bus operators to strictly follow safety guidelines, including:

  • Prohibiting mobile phone use while driving

  • Banning alcohol consumption by drivers

  • Enforcing speed limits and installing speed governors

  • Ensuring regular vehicle maintenance and repairs

  • Keeping emergency exits unobstructed

Despite these regulations, many buses fail to comply, leading to fatal accidents. The RTO has warned that intensive inspections will be conducted over the next few days to identify and penalize violations.

Mandatory Fitness Checks Before Operations

With the rising summer temperatures, the risk of bus fires has significantly increased. To mitigate this, the Pune RTO has made it mandatory for all private buses to clear fitness inspections before operating. Every bus must comply with:

  • Valid vehicle fitness certification

  • Updated insurance policies

  • Emergency equipment, including hammers for breaking glass in emergencies

Deputy Regional Transport Officer Swapnil Bhosale emphasized the importance of proactive safety measures: "Bus operators and drivers must ensure that their vehicles meet all safety standards before they hit the road. Fitness checks, insurance verification, and emergency preparedness are non-negotiable to protect passenger lives."
