Pune: As New Year’s Eve draws near, seafood has emerged as a top choice for Pune residents, leading to increased demand at local markets. The Ganesh Peth fish market is currently experiencing a surge in fish supply, with significant quantities being delivered from India’s eastern and western coasts. Traders attribute the heightened demand to the festive season, particularly after the fasting rituals of the Margashirsha month concluded.
Deep-sea fish such as pomfret, surmai (seer fish), ravas, and prawns have seen a consistent influx. On Sunday, December 29, approximately 18 to 20 tons of deep-sea fish were brought to the market, along with 200 to 300 kilograms of creek fish and 700 to 800 kilograms of river fish. Traders also reported receiving 20 to 25 tons of Rohu, Katla, and Silan fish from Andhra Pradesh.
Prices in the seafood market have remained stable compared to last week. For instance, deep-sea fish like pomfret (₹900–₹1,800 per kg depending on size), surmai (₹600–₹700 per kg), and prawns (₹160–₹1,500 per kg) have seen no significant price fluctuations. Creek and river fish varieties, including Bangda, Tisrya, and Rohu, are also being sold at steady rates.
Meanwhile, chicken, mutton, and eggs are maintaining their usual prices, with live chicken at ₹150 per kg, boneless chicken at ₹320 per kg, and goat mutton at ₹780 per kg. Egg prices range from ₹90 to ₹140 per dozen, depending on the variety.
