The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed a new flyover in the Shivajinagar area to address severe traffic congestion, especially between Sakhar Sankul and the old Mumbai–Pune Highway.
A consultant will be appointed to prepare a technical design for the project, which includes a flyover crossing the railway line and extending toward the College of Engineering Pune (COEP).
The new structure will streamline traffic flow from Shivajinagar Bus Stand to Wakdewadi and Sangamwadi, bypassing key choke points like Sancheti Hospital junction.
Pune, 25 July 2025: In response to growing traffic congestion in Pune’s Shivajinagar area, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed constructing a new flyover between Sakhar Sankul and the old Mumbai–Pune Highway. This initiative aims to ease daily traffic pressure, particularly along the Gopal Krishna Gokhale Road, Narveer Tanajivadi Road, and Wakdewadi stretch, which are known for frequent vehicle pile-ups.
The current connectivity between Sakhar Sankul and the highway includes a narrow underpass that restricts the movement of large vehicles. To overcome this limitation, PMC plans to build a flyover that will cross the railway tracks and continue toward the College of Engineering Pune (COEP).
A proposal to appoint a technical consultant for preparing the flyover design has been submitted to the Standing Committee for approval.
Even though there are already flyovers at COEP Chowk, Patil Estate, and near the Agriculture College in Shivajinagar, officials say the new flyover is essential due to the rising volume of traffic in the area. The proposed flyover will feature two directional lanes, one leading toward Wakdewadi and the other heading toward COEP, designed to optimize the flow of vehicles.
The new flyover is expected to especially benefit public transport. Buses departing from the Shivajinagar Bus Stand will be able to directly proceed toward Wakdewadi and Sangamwadi without having to take a detour via the heavily congested Sancheti Hospital junction. This change could significantly reduce travel time and improve road efficiency.
Once the Standing Committee approves the consultant’s appointment, PMC will begin the technical groundwork and planning phase. The new flyover project marks a critical step in addressing the city’s growing urban mobility challenges, especially in key transit zones like Shivajinagar.
