Pune Traffic Police beats youth over fine receipt: CCTV video viral

The matter of alleged police misconduct has drawn attention after a CCTV clip, purportedly showing traffic police constable Sanjay Jadhav assaulting a motorcyclist in Talegaon Dabhade near Pune, went viral on social media.

The incident is said to have taken place in March 2026, when Jadhav stopped law student Tushar Dalvi, who was riding a motorcycle with two friends, allegedly breaching the regulation that restricts motorcycles to a maximum of two riders.

Since the incident, social media platform X has been flooded with posts challenging police conduct, accountability, and the duties of law enforcement personnel. Numerous users are demanding stringent action against the constable after the CCTV footage was circulated.

The Tushar and his friends agreed to pay the fine for traffic volitions, but requested an e-challan as required by Maharashtra rules. The verbal spat over fine receipt soon led to confrontation between the two, because of Jadhav's objection to Tushar recording the video.

Backed by the CCTV, it shows Jadhav first confronting Tushar and then in an attempt to snatch his phone he pinned him down on the floor.

Dalvi stated that he and his friends agreed to settle the traffic fine but asked that an e-challan be issued, in line with Maharashtra’s traffic enforcement rules. The situation allegedly intensified when Dalvi started filming the encounter on his mobile phone, prompting objections from the constable.

The CCTV footage appears to show Jadhav confronting Dalvi before attempting to seize his phone. During the altercation, Dalvi was allegedly forced to the ground.

The video has triggered extensive reactions across social media. Many users have criticised the constable’s behaviour and called for his suspension or removal from service, while others remain doubtful that authorities will impose any serious disciplinary measures beyond a short-term suspension.

In a video shared on X, Dalvi's sister claimed that her brother was threatened when he went to the police station to lodge a complaint. She stated that police officials cautioned him that if he proceeded with the complaint, he could be booked under Section 353 of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly obstructing a public servant.

Numerous social media users have amplified the family’s call for stringent action against Jadhav. As of June 17, no formal statement on any disciplinary measures or the findings of an inquiry had been released. The re-emergence of the CCTV footage has intensified demands for accountability and decisive steps from senior Maharashtra police officials.
