Pune: The prices of tur dal, a staple in Indian households, have dropped significantly in the past month, offering much-needed relief to consumers. Wholesale prices have reduced by ₹20 to ₹25 per kg, bringing the current rate to around ₹130–₹135 per kg in the Pune Market Yard.
Increased Supply Drives Price Drop
The price drop is attributed to the start of the tur harvest season, particularly in Karnataka, which has seen a bumper crop this year. Increased arrivals from Karnataka have led to a rise in supply at the wholesale Bhusar market. The tur harvests from Marathwada, Vidarbha, and Gujarat are expected to begin in about 15 days, which could further reduce prices.
Currently, the Market Yard’s wholesale market receives 80 to 100 tons of tur dal daily. Traders predict a further ₹20 per kg reduction in wholesale prices once the supply from all regions stabilizes.
Global Imports Add to Supply
Imports of tur dal from Africa are also bolstering supply. African tur dal is currently priced at ₹110 per kg in the wholesale market, further pressuring domestic prices. With this year’s tur production expected to reach 4.4 million metric tons, consumers can anticipate continued price relief in the coming months.
June-July 2024: Wholesale prices peaked at ₹175 per kg.
November 2024: Prices dropped to ₹165 per kg.
January 2025: Current prices range between ₹130 and ₹135 per kg.
By the end of January, prices may stabilize around ₹120 per kg, according to trader estimates. "This is welcome news for the common man, as tur dal will once again be affordable for all," said Vijay Rathod, a trader at the Market Yard.
