Pune: As temperatures in Shirur Taluka surpass 42°C, pomegranate farmers in Takali Haji and surrounding villages have adopted nylon crop covers to shield their orchards from excessive heat. This initiative aims to enhance fruit quality and boost export-oriented production.

With pomegranate cultivation expanding rapidly in Shirur, farmers in areas like Fakate, Wadner, Pimperkhed, Jambut, Malathan, Kavthe Yemai, and Ahmadabad have dedicated thousands of hectares to the fruit. The region has witnessed significant economic growth from pomegranate farming, with some orchards yielding highly profitable returns.

In Takali Haji alone, nearly 200,000 saplings were planted last year, reinforcing the area's reputation as a key hub for pomegranate cultivation. However, farmers remain cautious after experiencing bacterial blight and wilt disease outbreaks four years ago, which led to widespread orchard removals.

Currently, farmers are proactively safeguarding their crops with timely pesticide and fungicide applications. As the summer heat intensifies, they have installed nylon crop covers, raising them 2 to 3 feet above the trees, supported by bamboo poles. This method helps mitigate sun damage and improves fruit quality, ensuring a higher market value.

The investment in crop protection is substantial, with farmers spending ₹45,000 per acre on fabric, bamboo, and labor. The widespread use of white nylon covers has transformed the landscape, giving orchards a distinctive white appearance.

With a strong market for pomegranates, farmers are optimistic about this year’s harvest, provided there are no unexpected climatic disruptions. The cumulative investment in crop protection measures across the region runs into crores of rupees, highlighting farmers' dedication to ensuring premium quality produce.
