Pune: Himani Chondhe, a promising 10-meter air rifle shooter from Bhugaon, dreams of representing India at the Olympics and winning a gold medal. However, her journey is fraught with financial obstacles that threaten to derail her aspirations.

Currently participating in a national competition in Bhopal, Himani has consistently proven her mettle in the sport. She has bagged 24 gold, 6 silver, and 3 bronze medals across various tournaments, including her stellar performance in 2023 at the national level. Himani has also participated in two international competitions, showcasing her potential to compete on the global stage.

Despite her achievements, Himani’s family faces significant financial constraints. Her father, Suryakant Chondhe, who runs a modest photocopy shop in Bhugaon, recently survived a major accident. The dual burden of medical expenses and the high cost of Himani’s training has left the family struggling.

The Cost of Excellence

To maintain her competitive edge, Himani requires advanced shooting equipment and consistent practice. She needs ₹4,000 worth of pellets daily, and the cost of a modern rifle amounts to approximately ₹4 lakh. These expenses have become increasingly unaffordable for her family.

Suryakant Chondhe expressed his hopes and challenges, stating, “Himani’s dedication and talent are undeniable. Despite our financial struggles, we’ve supported her as much as we can. However, the recent accident and mounting expenses have made it difficult to keep up. If the community extends financial help, I’m confident Himani will bring laurels to the nation.”

Community Support

Former Deputy Sarpanch of Hinjewadi, Tanaji Hulawale, along with his friends, stepped in to support Himani by donating ₹1.3 lakh. Businessman Anand Buchade, Babasaheb Sakhare, Vinayak Chothe, and Rohidas Dhumal were also present during the donation. Hulawale remarked, “Himani is a talented shooter, and we’ve done our best to ensure her journey isn’t hindered by financial constraints.”
