Pune: A surge in cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) has been reported in the Sinhagad Road area of Pune, including localities like Kirkatwadi, Nanded City, Dhayari, and Ambegaon.

Concerned residents have attributed the outbreak to contamination in the water supplied from local village wells. In response, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to install an automated meter system for sterilizing the water.

The automated system, which will operate 24/7, is designed to provide hourly updates on the water purification process to the municipal authorities.

The PMC has announced that two separate meters will be installed for the wells. This initiative aims to ensure precise and consistent sterilization, which has so far been performed manually without regular water quality checks.

Until now, water for the affected villages was directly supplied from the Khadakwasla Dam and sterilized in the wells. However, due to the manual process, the dosage of sterilization chemicals has often been inaccurate, leading to concerns about water quality.

To address this, the new system will include two additional tanks and an automated mechanism to regulate and monitor the sterilization process effectively.

The rising number of GBS cases has prompted the PMC to expedite the implementation of this system, ensuring that the sterilization process is both accurate and efficient.
