Pune: A 30-year-old man fell nearly 150 to 200 feet into a valley while attempting a stunt at Torna Fort on Sunday morning (9th). Thanks to the quick response of the Archaeology Department guards and fellow tourists, he was rescued in time.
The youth, identified as Suraj Ashok Vedpathak (resident of Donje, Haveli Taluka), chose a risky, alternative route instead of the designated trekking path. While attempting a dangerous stunt, he slipped and fell into the valley near Zunjar Machi.
On witnessing the incident, Archaeology Department guards Dadu Wegre and Rajendra Borane, along with Satara-based tourist Haresh Pawar, quickly organized a rescue operation. Using ropes, they descended into the valley and pulled him back to safety.
Concerns Over Safety at Historical Forts
This incident comes just a day after a tourist died of a heart attack at the fort on Saturday. With an increasing number of visitors at Torna and Rajgad Forts, safety concerns are growing. Many tourists, particularly youngsters, engage in risky stunts without any precautions, leading to accidents.
Former Vice-President of Rajgad Panchayat Samiti, Ananta Darwatkar, highlighted the urgent need for medical facilities and police personnel at the fort, especially on weekends, to prevent such incidents.
Archaeology Department guard Dadu Wegre also expressed concern over the lack of safety awareness among young visitors, stating that many accidents have occurred due to reckless behavior.
