Pune: The much-awaited Suncity-Karvenagar flyover, being constructed to reduce congestion on Sinhagad Road, is progressing at a slower-than-expected pace, with only 54% of the project completed so far. The deadline for completion, set for March 2025, may now be extended, according to officials from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
The 279-meter-long and 30-meter-wide bridge is being built over the Mutha River, connecting Suncity to Karvenagar near Dudhane Lawns. Once completed, this new link will cut down travel time between Sinhagad Road and Karvenagar to just five minutes. The estimated cost of the project is ₹32.56 crore.
In addition to the flyover, PMC is also constructing an alternative road from Ganga Bhagyoday Society to Karvenagar via the Hume Pipe Company premises. This road will extend towards Warje and Kothrud, providing an additional route for commuters.
The flyover is planned to connect with the Shivne-Kharadi Road, which is still incomplete due to land acquisition delays. Local residents oppose the project in its current form, arguing that the influx of traffic from Sinhagad Road will overwhelm the underdeveloped roads in Karvenagar.
Citizens have demanded that pending Development Plan (DP) roads be completed before the bridge is opened to prevent severe congestion. Protests have already taken place, urging PMC to address these issues first.
In response, PMC has started the process of land acquisition and will seek additional funding from the state government to complete the required road infrastructure before opening the flyover to the public.
