Pune: Residents of Swapnapurti Residency in Chikhali can now breathe a sigh of relief after the improper tax levied on their society was brought to the attention of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).

Following a complaint lodged by the residents with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), the tax department has promised to reassess and charge taxes in accordance with proper regulations.

The issue came to light when society residents approached MNS city president Sachin Chikhale regarding inflated taxes levied on their flats.

MNS officials, including city secretary Manoj Landge, Bhosari Assembly sub-division president Satyam Patre, and branch president Chetan Kulkarni, met with PCMC tax department head Nilesh Deshmukh. During their meeting, the society’s tax-related concerns were discussed in detail.

The key decision made was to cancel the tax charges imposed since 2019 and reassess them starting from November 18, 2023, when the society's electricity connection was established.

Furthermore, if parking space is not mentioned in the Index-2 document, no tax will be applied for it. For residents whose tax bills reflect an incorrect square footage, taxes will be recalculated based on the actual area specified in Index-2.

To ensure correct entries in the tax records, residents were instructed to submit photocopies of their electricity bills, Index-2 documents, and tax receipts to the tax department by September 16, 2024.

This decision provides much-needed relief to the residents, who had been facing unjust tax assessments for several years.
