Triple Talaq: Woman Files Police Complaint Against Husband Under Muslim Women Act

In-laws harassed her for dowry and expressed their desire for a male child. When she gave birth to two daughters, her husband and in-laws subjected her to physical and verbal abuse.

Pune: A woman has filed a police complaint alleging that her husband divorced her by uttering "talaq" three times because she gave birth to daughters instead of a son. She was subsequently driven out of her home along with her daughters and later found out that her husband remarried.

The complaint, lodged at Chandan Nagar Police Station, has led to a case being registered under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act 2019 against her husband, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, and her husband’s new wife.

Harassment Over Daughters and Dowry

The complainant revealed that her in-laws harassed her for dowry and expressed their desire for a male child. When she gave birth to two daughters, her husband and in-laws subjected her to physical and verbal abuse.

On one occasion, her husband divorced her by saying "talaq, talaq, talaq" and declared that he no longer had any relationship with her or their daughters before expelling them from the house.

While she was living at her parental home, the accused reportedly barged into her house. Her sister-in-law and mother-in-law held her hands and pulled her hair while accusing her of lodging complaints against them.

They threatened to harm her and her daughters, forcibly snatched her phone, and destroyed it. They also took her daughters’ phones without consent.

The brother-in-law attempted to attack her with a bat, further escalating the situation. The case, which covers incidents from July 2014 to January 3, 2025, is currently being investigated by Police Sub-Inspector Ashwini Patil.
