Pune: Students from VIBGYOR Group of Schools participated in the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29), the United Nations’ flagship climate summit, held in Baku from November 16 to 20, 2024.

Representing Mumbai, Pune, and Vadodara, students from VIBGYOR High campuses demonstrated their commitment to sustainability, engaging with global leaders and experts to address pressing climate challenges.

Organized under the school’s Climate Academy, the delegation participated in an intensive course led by the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL).

They explored key topics such as sustainability laws, low-carbon financial strategies, and pathways to implementing the Paris Agreement.

Esteemed contributors from the UN-Environment, IUCN, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) provided students with actionable insights and tools to promote sustainability in their communities.

The students also attended dynamic sessions with thought leaders, including Philippe Birker, Co-Founder of Climate Farmers, who discussed regenerative agriculture, and Martin Harper, CEO of Birdlife International, who highlighted global conservation success stories.

Advocacy on climate resilience and well-being by speakers like Kaluki Paul Mutuku, a Kenyan environmental defender, and Alexander Pohl, a Wim Hof Method instructor, further enriched the students’ understanding of climate impacts.

Empowering Future Leaders

Reflecting on the experience, a VIBGYOR student shared: “Attending COP29 was transformative. It broadened my understanding of global climate issues and inspired me to act.

Sessions with experts like Philippe Birker sparked ideas on sustainable agriculture, and the certificate course deepened my knowledge of laws essential for driving meaningful change.”

Commitment to Global Education

In addition to the conference, students visited ADA School in Azerbaijan to explore the nation’s educational and cultural landscape, fostering cross-cultural learning and global awareness.

Kavita Kerawalla, Vice-Chairperson of VIBGYOR Group of Schools, emphasized the institution’s commitment to shaping socially responsible leaders: “Our students’ participation in COP29 reflects our dedication to nurturing globally conscious individuals who will drive solutions for a sustainable future. We are proud of their efforts and the values they represent.”
